652 dead, 808 missing in Philippine floods

ILIGAN, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine Red Cross says the death toll from a storm that ravaged a wide swath of the south has risen to 652 with 808 others still missing.

Red Cross Secretary-General Gwendolyn Pang said Sunday that flash floods set off by Tropical Storm Washi killed 346 people in Cagayan de Oro city and 206 in nearby Iligan city. Deaths were also reported in five other southern and central provinces.

Pang said more people have reported missing relatives, including 447 in Iligan and 347 in Cagayan de Oro.

It was believed by the folk that when a mermaid is captured (and held captive), it results in a big flood. After "Ondoy," it is said that more people went to the Manila Aquarium than usual to check whether a mermaid was, indeed, in one of the display tanks.

Two friends who regularly go to Dumaguete, and one who lives there, also relate that when the seaside city went underwater from heavy rains four years ago, fishermen up and down the coast marched angrily to the Silliman Marine Science lab armed with oars. They were soon joined by farmers carrying pitchforks, whose farms had been inundated. They demanded the release of the mermaid that the marine biologists had purportedly been keeping in a tank (for study?).

Tim Tebow is one of the more polarizing figures in sports today. Fans love him with a manic passion, while his detractors constantly heap vitriol. In an interview for a feature story in the Dec. 19 issue of TIME magazine (available online and on the iPad to print subscribers), Tebow talks openly about the cause of these extreme emotions — his very public faith, epitomized by his habit of “Tebowing” during games. Tebow once told a group of prisoners: “If you have Jesus Christ in your heart, you are going to spend eternity in heaven. If you don’t, you’re going to spend eternity in hell.”

Such a strict religious view is offensive to some people. But Tebow, when asked if he regrets anything he has said publicly about his faith, responds: “No, sir. Some of the things that have given me the most joy in my football career are the different times when I’ve spoken about my faith. Whether it was wearing Bible verses under my eyes in college, or wearing John 3:16 in the national championship game … Because every time I do that, that’s humbling for me because I know where my strength comes from. And I want to honor the person that gave them to me.”

The memory footprint of Firefox 7 (and thus 8) has also been drastically reduced, along with much-needed improvements to garbage collection.

According to our own benchmarks, start up, session restore, and first paint — how long it takes Firefox to appear after you click its icon, and how long it takes to re-open your previous tabs — have been continuously tackled since Firefox 7 first emerged, about two months ago. There’s a 10% difference between Firefox 5 and 7 — and a further 10% speed-up between FF7 and FF8. This isn’t merely an under-the-hood, synthetic-benchmark, on-paper thing either: the difference between FF5 and FF8 is very, very noticeable.
